Oscars 2009 Parties
Let's take one last, loving look at these celebrity bitches getting their drunk on, shall we?

Jessica Biel attends the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Oscar de la Renta Fall 2009
It's just alright. To be honest, it looks a little cheesy - and the gold belt was not an improvement.

Carrie Underwood attends the 17th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscar Party in Georges Chakras Spring 2009 Couture
Kinda hated this one. It's too stiff and shapeless on her, like she's wearing a very embellished lamp shade.

Carolina Herrera attends the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Carolina Herrera Spring 2009
On the model, it's an interesting, if unflattering dress. On a non-model, i.e., Carolina Herrera, it just looks like too much dress. It's just not working on her.

Claire Danes attends the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Zac Posen Spring 2009
This is a really tough dress to pull off and we'll give her credit for trying, but again, this just isn't working. Hate the neckline and the sleeves.

Debra Messing attends the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Jenny Packham Fall 2008
Biggest HATEDRESS of the night. We can't tell you enough how much we hate this dress. It's just plain ugly - these pictures are actually almost flattering - and her boobs were hanging out the side.

DVF attends the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Diane von Furstenberg Spring 2009
Diane, we love you and we congratulate you on your legs, but something a little more formal for the next Oscar party, mkay?

Gwen Stefani attends the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Chanel Fall 2008 Couture
This is another really tough dress to pull off. The trick is, you need to be 20 years old and a model. Gwen is neither.

Jessica Alba attends the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Roland Mouret Resort 2009
Loathe as we are to admit it, she looks pretty fabulous.

Madonna attends the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Christian Dior Spring 2009
Lorenzo thinks she knocked it out of the park. Tom is scared of her arms.

Marion Cotillard attends the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Elie Saab Fall 2008
Gorgeous. This is the first pretty much flawless after-party look we've seen.

Marisa Tomei attends the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Juan Carlos Obando Spring 2009
It's an interesting dress in both versions, but we have to say we like it a lot better without the color blocking.

Sharon Stone attends the 17th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscar Party in Christian Dior Pre-Fall 2009
Hello, nipples! And howyadoin there, hips? It's like a salute to Sharon Stone's body! In dress form! This ain't flattering at all. The distinct whiff of desperation doesn't help.

Taraji P. Henson attends the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Nina Ricci Spring 2009
Mmm. No. This is a clunker considering what she was wearing earlier in the night. It's just a little to twee and adorable.

Victoria Beckham attends the 17th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscar Party in Victoria Beckham Fall 2009
Honestly, she is the ONLY woman who could pull off this dress. It's a bit much, but that's Posh for ya.

Diane von Furstenberg Fall 2009 Collection

DVF showed her Fall collection and Style.com was there:
"She dubbed her Fall collection "Nomad," and sent out a melting pot's worth of fabrics, embroideries, and patterns—from leopards to camouflages to tapestry prints. Von Furstenberg is betting that in "times like these," what a girl really wants is a little pizzazz. But comfort counts, too, so accompanying almost all of her wrap dresses, sacks, bubbles, and tunic-miniskirt combos were generous, slouchy cardigans or cocoon coats, as well as knit tights or leggings—some in leather, others in prints that should come in at a very nice price point."

She definitely went for the funk this time. That's the only word we can think of to describe this collection: "funky." Well, that and "bohemian" but that's such an overused word in fashion. It's a thick, heavy, comfy look she's selling - lots of prints, lots of textures - and that's entirely appropriate for recession-era clothing. A runway show is always about presenting a lot of look and expecting the buyer or the editor to mentally pare each look down to its components. In other words, you rarely see someone wearing separates exactly as they were paired on the runway and you rarely see fashion editorials where the clothes are photographed exactly as they appeared on the runway. It's expected that one will mix and match and edit. It feels like DVF really went whole hog on this one and piled a ton of looks on each model. Perhaps that's appropriate for a collection that's addressing such uncertain economic times. There's a cocooning feel, like an attempt to ward of the coming cold by piling on everything you own.

Heidi attended the show wearing Diane von Furstenberg Spring 2009 and the same damn YSL shoes that everyone's wearing lately.

It's a cute dress and Heidi certainly does it justice but damn, girl. It's February in Manhattan. We know you're made of tough German stock, but still.

Barbie Fall 2009 Collection
Y'know, there are those who say that Bryant Park has gotten a little too...shall we say, democratic in the last few years and all too often are renting out tents to groups with only a peripheral presence in the fashion world. We tend to agree. On the other hand, the Barbie fashion show was just plain fun and besides, is there a woman anywhere more fashionable than that little plastic bitch?
"The iconic doll celebrated 50 years with a runway show featuring looks created by 50 American designers, including Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Anna Sui and Diane von Furstenberg. The world’s top models brought the doll to life in three themed wardrobe sets. The first looks were a tribute to the retro dolls of the '50s and '60s, followed by a Malibu Barbie-inspired crop with big hair and tanned skin, and the finale featured edgier looks with clear plastic toppers that gave the audience a peek into Barbie's bright future."
Some of these looks are just plain adorable and we salute the designers who really got what this show was all about. Some (Malandrino and Burch, we're looking at you) just didn't and threw any old look on a model and called it Barbie.

Diane von Furstenberg
"Barbie represents a confident and independent woman with an amazing ability to have fun while remaining glamorous," said Diane von Furstenberg.

Michael Kors
“Barbie is everything that an All-American gal should be… sporty, smart, sophisticated and sexy,” said Michael Kors.

Catherine Malandrino
“The Flag is the ultimate dress for the most famous American icon,” said Catherine Malandrino.

Betsey Johnson
"I'm a Barbie girl, in a Betsey world," said Betsey Johnson.

What should Michelle Obama wear?

WWD asked several top designers (and Project Runway judges) to sketch Inaugural Ball gowns for Michelle Obama. Some also sketched day looks for her.
"...just about everyone yearns to dress Michelle, who could raise the profile of American fashion around the world. Yet with the exception of Maria Cornejo, her current favorites, as well as a few majors, declined WWD’s request for sketches. Some are loath to presume to offer unsolicited advice, while others, it seems, are definitely in the Inaugural sweepstakes and prefer, or have been asked, to keep their participation low-pro.
But plenty more happily offered their visions for Michelle and her charming first daughters, for the big day and evening events of Jan. 20."
As you may remember, we have expressed some concern regarding Michelle O's fashion choices and several of our readers took us to task for it, shocked and appalled that anyone would have an opinion on what a First Lady wears. Apparently it's disrespectful or something and no one has ever expressed such views about a First Lady before.
If you can handle such appalling disrespect, here's what we think about several of the entries:
Very pretty - and the color would look great on her. We're not convinced she's given to such grandiosity, though.
Again, the color would look fantastic on her and we think this silhouette looks more like her than the previous one.
Gorgeous.
Also gorgeous but perhaps a little too self-consciously Jackie-esque.
Zac, were you drunk? Hideous.
This is pretty, but it seems a little off-concept. Is she meant to wear this to a parade in January?
Uh...Messrs. Badgley and Mischka? Have you actually seen her body? She's a tall, trim, lovely woman who would look great in various styles but she definitely should not be wearing something that's going to point arrows at her hips and butt.
Besides, this just doesn't look like her at all. Too young and too glam.
On the other hand, we really like this look. It's chic and a little sexy and a little kickass.
Betsey, doll. Don't ever change.
See more sketches here.

Judging a Bunch of Judges
A boatload of our favorite (or not-so-favorite) judges attended the 5th Anniversary of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund at Skylight Studios in New York City. Let's be opinionated, shall we?
La DVF in all her DVF-iness:

DVF Fall 2008 Collection
Model: Tatyana Usova
We don't know how the hell she does it. Every so-called rule in the book would say that this is too youthful a look for a woman her age, but somehow, she always manages to pull it off. IN.
Vera Wang:

Vera Wang Spring 2009 Collection
Model: Yulia Kharlaponova
It's not a bad dress, but that muppet shrug is not helping the look. OUT.
Tory Burch:

Yves Saint Laurent Fall 2008 Collection
Model: Flavia de Oliveira
Gorgeous dress. She looks fantastic and we have to give her props for going against the grain and not wearing her own design. IN.
Speaking of which, we're not sure who they're wearing, but...

Kate Spade looks frumpy as hell...

And Zac Posen is doing his damnedest to bring back the Dandy look. One OUT and one IN.
Your thoughts, bitches?

Congrats again, Judy Noodles!

Okay, it was wonderful seeing the divine DVF again, especially in a season somewhat light on the fashion industry insider type of judge, but did anyone else roll their eyes a little?
First, there were the designers themselves WALKING THROUGH A GIANT DVF and saying "We're in the meatpacking district?! Where are we going? I just don't know!"
Then we have DVF herself descending from heaven. We hear she nixed the wing idea.
Still, fabulous as always. We just could've done without all the silly staging.
And Judy Noodles knocks it out again! Stand back, bitches. This girl has found her groove and despite the nerdy, ren-faire-esque exterior, she's a hardcore competitor now.
We thought it was a lovely design. Simple and classic, with a twist. Said twist being the cropped jacket.
To be honest, though, it looks perfect without that twist.
The jacket seemed incongruous and strangely enough, it didn't look all that well made either. But when she took it off...wow.
It's not reinventing the wheel but that is a simply gorgeous dress.
We love the soft, sexy neckline, the high waist with the skinny belt and the looong form-fitting skirt. This could have walked right off an MGM set in 1939.
And yet, it somehow doesn't look old or costumey. LOVE the ruffle in the back. Elegant and visually interesting.
Honestly, she should've just ditched the jacket. It wasn't a bad idea, but it just didn't come off the way she planned it. For one, that fabric is probably too heavy for the design.
For another, the dress looked so darn good without it that we think the judges collectively decided to edit out the jacket in their decision-making. Lucky girl, that Judy Noodles.
Now, if you've got an Amex card and a hankering to blow 700 bucks before breakfast, you could always buy this gorgeous dress here.
It looks like they translated it almost exactly, too.
