Trends for Fall '09: Neon Colors
It's back, bitches! To go along with your shoulder pads, you can now have your pick of '80s inspired neon-colored clothing. Aren't you excited? Unlike the "accentuated shoulder," which is a silhouette that's gone in and out of style for centuries, neon is very much of a certain decade and it's a decade that most of us who lived through have no desire to revisit. Still, you just can't underestimate the power of nostalgia and it was only a matter of time before eye-searing colors made a return to the runway.Of the following, it really only looks like Duchess Kors (and some of the Versace) recycled the original neons exactly as they appeared in the infant days of MTV. The rest of what you see here, the fashion editors like to call "neon" but it's more of an interpreted version of the original. From where we're sitting, most of the following could just be called "really bright pastels." They evoke the originals, but in a more toned-down version, thank Jesus. We really like the Marc Jacobs pallete, as well as the Hilfiger and Jill Sander looks. We think the Narciso Rodriguez colors are just plain ugly.

Trends for Fall '09: Accentuated Shoulders

Yes, kittens. That's how they're referring to it now: "accentuated shoulders." Probably because "shoulder pads" evokes images of the Joans Collins and Crawford. But y'know? We say, "Embrace the shoulders, bitches!" Sure, there were times (mainly in the mid '40s and late '80s) when the reverse triangle silhouette got a little out of hand, but that doesn't make the "accentuated shoulder" a bad thing, necessarily. After all, there were times when hems went so high that the more daring women out there risked impromptu gynecological exams every time they walked up a flight of steps but that doesn't mean above-the-knee hems disappeared forever. It's time for a return to the "Don't fuck with me, fellas" silhouette.
As with any trend, it's all in how it's utilized. Let's do a quick rundown, shall we?
Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Balmain, Chanel, Donna Karan, Emanuel UngaroYes, maybe, Klingon, frumpy, '80s, '80s*.
* '80s is a synonym for "no."
* '80s is a synonym for "no."
Gianfranco Ferré, Gucci, Hermès, Jean Paul Gaultier, Louis Vuitton, Marc JacobsYes, yes, maybe, no, yes, BIG NO.
Nina Ricci, Oscar de la Renta, Preen, Salvatore Ferragamo, Versace, Zac PosenYes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
There. Wasn't that easy? Now, obviously this silhouette isn't going to work with every body type. Women who are naturally wide up top (not necessarily heavy; just women who naturally have a broad back or shoulders) should probably stay away. On the other hand, this silhouette's a godsend to the pear-shaped gal, because the wider shoulder will balance out her wider hips. Also, very short women should definitely stay away. It may make them feel tough and kickass, but it gives off the distinct whiff of "Lollipop Guild" on the tiny gals.
So how about it? Is this a trend you could ever embrace (or re-embrace, if you're old enough to remember the Dynasty days)?

Trends for Spring '09: Bangles
There's something about a big, bold, bangle that says "fun" to us. We don't know why that is, but if bangles make a statement, then to us, it's saying "I have style AND I know how to have fun with it."
It's not as if bangles ever really went away, so perhaps it's a bit of a misnomer to call them a "trend." Still, the runways seem to be loaded with them more than ever. Designers fall in and out of love with various style elements and right now, they're back in love with the bangle. And because we're talking runway, we're talking big and bold and maybe a little impractical. Most women wouldn't wear so many of these at once, but they make for a great, dramatic look when you're sashaying past a bunch of bitchy fashion editors.
As for which of these get the thumbs up from us...well, all of them do. Maybe we're just feeling the love today but we have not one bitchy thing to say about any of these. We think they're great.

Trends for Spring '09: Statement Necklaces

Well, Korto and Malan (which sounds like a detective agency), got it right for their Spring 'o9 shows. We love both of these big clunky necklaces. Certainly, La Nina has a history of wearing them well. We're all for this trend, in theory. Unfortunately, we're in sharp disagreement about the following ones, all of which made recent runway appearances. So much so that Tom turned to Lorenzo upon viewing them and said "You're kidding, right?" According to Tom, most of what you're about to see ranges from ugly to ridiculous, but Lorenzo really likes them (most of them).
Like any accessory, it's all in how you wear it and how you pair it. As we said, we like clunky necklaces in theory. We just can't agree on these clunky necklaces. What say you, minions?
