Ashlie says farewell

"Last night I watched the show with an eagerness to accept the consequences and move on from the experience. That was until the botched editing job distorted the chain of events."

"Meeting Zac Posen was one of my Top 10 things to do before I die."

"I have very little regrets about the show. I had fun, but I must admit that the last episode was shocking. Surprisingly, credit for the styling of the show was given all to DyShaun when, in reality, I decided on the makeup look for the show, although DyShaun did choose the hair."

"I actually wrote the entire copy, came up with the “Alchemist” title and printed out the pictures while DyShaun merely arranged the photos and the copy. In fact, the morning before elimination, DyShaun asked me to allow him to speak since he was responsible for the layout."

"Over all, I gained a ton of knowledge and am tremendously thankful for the opportunity. Meeting Anne and Joe, and styling under their mentorship, was like being enrolled in an exclusive honors program at Parsons."

Stylista's Ashlie says farewell to ELLE [ELLE]

T Lo interviews Joan (Also Ryan!)

Darlings, we've had a tough time keeping this one under wraps but in the latest issue of Metrosource magazine, we got the chance to interview our current girl crush, Christina Hendricks, the fabulous Joan Holloway of Mad Men.

See, the theme of the issue is "People We Love" and our editor (We love saying "our editor." It sounds so Lois Lane-y.) asked us if we had any ideas for interview subjects. We were all "People We Love? JOAN HOLLOWAY, bitch!" and he was all "I'm on it!" and then we were all "Score!"

She was a pleasure to interview and she's absolutely nothing like Joan. She's giggly and funny and sweet. She doesn't even sound like Joan when she talks. Some bits:

You’ve become quite the poster child for curvaceous women. It seems every article about you has to mention your body.
I guess I’m surprised because this is how I’ve always looked. I’ve had lots of people come up to me on the street — women and men — and tell me how refreshing it is to see someone like me on TV. That feels really good. I’ve always felt like a woman, and I’ve always had curves and felt beautiful.

Well, clearly the women and straight men love you for it, but we’re here to tell you the gays LOVE Joan Holloway.
(Laughs) That’s fabulous!

We must have seen at least a half-dozen Joan Holloway drag queens on Halloween!
That’s so funny, because Matt Weiner [the show’s creator] said after the first couple of episodes, “I know we’re a success if I see Joan Holloways on Halloween."

But don't take our word for it, go read it.

In the same issue, we sat down and interviewed Ryan Brown, the cute one from Flipping Out. Also an incredibly charming and down to earth guy.

How did you meet Jeff Lewis?
He and I met through a mutual friend of ours who was an interior designer as well. He introduced us years ago. I had heard some stories about Jeff, and a lot of my friends were completely in love with him.
We didn’t work together when we were dating. We broke up, and there was a period of six months to a year where we talked about doing some projects together. We bought our first house together and started working on that. It was certainly a rocky road at first. I don’t recommend it to anybody — working with your ex right away — but it seemed to work with Jeff and me, for some reason. I think what it came down to was that he’s one of the people in my life that I absolutely trust.
To this day, we get along great. We fight, we scream and yell — you know, everything that’s shown on the show — but at the end of the day we are a family, and we realize that.

How did Flipping Out come about?
It was basically the brainchild of Jeff’s assistant, Jenni Pulos. She had an idea for a show [featuring] her and her husband called The Wannabes. They were trying to be actors, and they came up with what I thought was a great concept: [The show would follow] their everyday life, going to auditions and trying to become actors while at the same time working for Jeff. But when they got Jeff on camera and saw what a big personality he was, Bravo ended up really liking that concept, so the show revolved more around Jeff than Jenni. Jenni is amazing. Honestly, [she’s] one of the best people I know.

Again, go read the whole thing. Metrosource cycles the links on their web page, so we don't know how long these will stay up. We've got a bunch of new interviews scheduled (they'll have to remain a surprise for now) for their next issue, so if you can't find Metrosource in your neck of the woods and you want to keep up with the T Lo experience, you can always subscribe.

La Malandrino

Catherine Malandrino has just put out a book (entitled, appropriately enough, "Catherine Malandrino") celebrating her 10th anniversary in the fashion world. The book includes personal photos, ad campaigns, and sketches by the designer herself. Chic Report chatted with her at her book signing:

"I was thinking I wanted to capture memoirs of what I’ve been able to do, to achieve, and to celebrate with the people who’ve been helping me during these last 10 years."

Regarding her iconic flag dress:

"When I chose to do the book, it was one year ago, and this image, I did it a long time ago. This dress was created 8 years ago, but it was a dress that really put me on stage, and I wanted to celebrate this first step in America."

That was the dress that really put her on the map. In a somewhat gruesome stroke of luck on her part, the dress came out, 9/11 happened, and America was suddenly caught up in a patriotic fervor that had as much to do with its icons as its principles. Suddenly, everyone was wearing it: Madonna, Demi Moore, and Halle Berry all put it on the map. In the wake of the recent election, the dress has been making a celebrity comeback as it's been seen recently on Kelly Ripa (the morning after the election), Keisha Whitaker (on the night of the election), and Heidi Klum.

Here's La Fabuleuse at her book signing last week, looking (unsurprisingly) fabulous:

She's wearing modified pieces from her fall '08 collection:

Love that shade of green.

Although the purple looks fantastic on her.

Stylista: We Protest!

Well, it's always nice to see the show veer unexpectedly towards the actual fashion world. Not that this was the most realistic challenge - editorial assistants, after all, aren't in the habit of mounting fashion shows all by themselves - but it did really put the contestants through their paces and gave them some valuable hands-on experience.

So, everybody wanted Jolibe.

There's a reason for that: the clothes are to-die. Just ask Natalie Portman.

Not that we love every single piece, but the overall look is structured and tailored and very urban and modern. We approve.

Anyway, they got the best designer and still managed to fuck it up. Let's examine how, shall we?

THAT's how.

Oh alright. Sure, Ashlie deserves her share of the blame, but Dyshaun was being his usual pushy self and the decisions they were (he was) making were pretty lame.

Although they both deserve blame for snatching up all the shoes. Sure, you could argue that it was fair game, but if you're making that kind of argument this late in the competition, then you're supporting the idea that strategy is more important than talent.

Anyway, back to the bad decisions.

"We're totally thinking out of the box with hair and makeup."

Uh...no, you weren't. That look couldn't have been any more standard and boring.

And for all the smack talk about how they knew what they were doing, that fashion show didn't exactly go off without a hitch. Lots of dead air and lots of instances of models looking dazed as they're shoved out on the runway in poorly styled outfits. Color us underimpressed.

Unfortunately, the lameness continued back at the office.

To be fair, this page was bad due to a team effort.

Once again, Ashlie shows no ability to visually edit and she shoved too many small pictures on to one page.

We're not all that crazed about the big block of black, either. Your eye doesn't know where to go.

And once again, Dyshaun makes an egregious error in the copy. This is...what? The third or fourth time he's done that? And he's applying for an editorial position. You couldn't get a job as a proofreader if you did that once, let alone 3 or 4 times.

In other news, Zac is cute.

And Ann is wearing slightly better outfits although the color does nothing for her and we don't think she can pull off heavy jewelry.

This was a bullshit blue-boxing. Dyshaun has made so many mistakes and showed so little talent for the position while Ashlie has been a frontrunner from day one. Besides, "too many pictures" is a problem that can easily be fixed while "typos in everything" is way more of a red flag.
